They believe scars are holy, and hate anyone who isn’t sufficiently scarified. So far the most success I’ve had is with a colony of nudists who live underground, growing and eating disgusting cave fungus which they love and eat exclusively.

My current base is carved into a mountain and feels nice and cozy I’m looking forward to hearing about someone’s colony of blind cannibals living on an Antarctic ice sheet and all the crazy antics they get up to. Some ideologies definitely aren’t a good choice for new players, but experienced players will certainly get some enjoyment out of the more challenging ones. The blindness ideology in particular is so difficult that I can’t imagine anyone but the most hardcore Rimworld enthusiasts even trying it out. Forcing a carnivore only lifestyle on your colony can make it very difficult to gather enough food to allow for population growth. The only real issue I see with Ideology is that some of the ideologies are undeniably more difficult than the others. Of course, if you decided to choose an ideology that sees this kind of technology as abhorrent your pawns will refuse to utilize it, but there’s always an interesting tradeoff to every ideology that makes it worth trying out. The tradeoff is you’ll lose access to that pawn for long periods of time, up to ten days if you decide to put them through age reversal. Load a pawn into one of these Austin Powers freezing machines and you can choose to heal them, force artificial happiness on them or even reverse a year of ageing. Ideology is dense with content, and I’m happy to say that it gives Rimworld some of the depth it needed.

Performing rituals, exploring ruins, gathering artifacts, converting your captives, even selling your entire colony to your allies and starting over for a chance at acquiring some insanely powerful bonuses, just to name a few. You finally have reasons beyond survival to reach the late game. Ideology takes a big step towards turning that 2D line graph of progression into 3D by adding new goals to accomplish and fun new mechanics to pursue those goals with. You realize that the game progresses like a 2D line graph every time, spiking up or down based on which storyteller you picked and gradually leveling out the longer you survive. The more secure your colony becomes, the more the sense of drama and progression disappears. By late game you have a successful base, probably with some elaborate traps for bad guys and at least a dozen pawns who are extremely well armed to boot. It’s a great experience as you progress through the early and mid game, but in the late game you eventually slam face first into the brick wall that is the game’s lack of depth. It took me about three playthroughs of standard Rimworld before I really started to become aware of it’s problems. It’s a shame so few of the reviews talk about Rimworld’s issues because this DLC feels like it was made specifically to address some them.

Very few of the reviews, including mine, go into the specifics of what makes Rimworld work, and I can’t help but think it’s because most of us didn’t really understand them. My own review of Rimworld was a sappy love story about two of my favorite pawns which seemed to resonate with people, but still makes me cringe a little each time I reread it. Other reviewers explain how they committed war crimes and built businesses out of illegally harvested human organs, and decorated their colony with the leftover human skin. Many reviewers have wacky and hilarious stories to tell about a tragedy that happened to their colony. Rimworld is a game that’s been smothered in so much love that someone who’s never played it would probably think the game is a flawless masterpiece if all they had to go off of was the Steam reviews.
